The "Garden of Earth and Ocean" is an expression of aliveness, of the darkness and light we all hold within ourselves. We are, each, a garden of earth and ocean, of liquid tides and fireflies, moons, rustling leaves, and many teeming, whirling, dancing thoughts, sensations, memories, and dreams.

This site-specific installation occupies a beautiful little room on the banks of the York River in Maine, at the George Marshall Store Gallery. Garden of Earth and Ocean transforms a space that already has a strong personality into a surreal dreamscape, seemingly floating in the breeze that drifts through the windows from the adjacent tidal river.

Each piece is filled with intricate details—both vivid and subtle—that echo the dense, teeming life of a garden, rising from a shadowy, layered understory into a bright, colorful canopy. A wide variety of plants, both foraged and home-grown, are infused into these silks. Oak, sumac, marigolds, weld, coreopsis, tickseed, avocado pits, indigo, and, of course, seaweed, contribute to the many layers of print and color.

The exhibition is on view at the George Marshall Store Gallery until August 17th—be sure to catch it!

*Each unique piece in the installation, and additional ready-to-wear kerchiefs are for sale through the gallery.
